Governor Bownback to be at the Fort Tomorrow Aug. 31!

Brownback has a planned trip to the Fort in Fort Scott, Kansas to name another 5 of the 25 most notable Kansans in the states 150 years of statehood. Susan and Abi plan to attend in period dress for the occasion.

According to the Kansas Historical Society website this visit is planned for 10 to 11 am at the Fort. I am not aware if it's in one of the buildings or out front, but if you would like to see and maybe shake hands with the Governor plan to be there. The staff will surely know.

Letters about Literature Writing Contest

Calling all students grade 4-12! Write a letter to an author whose book has changed your life and be a winner!

Student submissions to Letters About Literature (LAL), a national reading and writing initiative sponsored nationally by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and in Kansas by the Kansas Center for the Book in the State Library of Kansas, are now being accepted.

To enter, readers write a reflective letter to an author, living or from the past, describing how that author’s  work somehow changed the student’s view of the world or him/herself. The project has three competition levels: Level 1 for students in grades 4-6; Level 2 for students in grades 7-8; and Level 3 for students in grades 9-12.

Winners on the state level each receive a cash award from the Kansas Center for the Book as well as a $50 Target gift card. National winners will receive a $500 Target gift card. The libraries of national winners and runners-up will receive cash grants from Target in the names of the winners.

Target sponsors Letters About Literature as part of its national reading initiative, “Ready, Sit, Read!” which is aimed at fostering love of reading among children at an early age.

Visit http://www.lettersaboutliterature.org
<http://www.lettersaboutliterature.org/> for participation guidelines.

Consider how Letters About Literature might fit into classroom activities or enhance programming for children, and use the entry coupon on the reverse side of the form to enter. Feel free to download and photocopy—one entry form is required for each student. Fire Station Field Trip

Hello everyone,

I spoke with Brad Hill, a fire fighter with the Pittsburg Fire Dept. and arranged a field trip to visit there on Thursday, September 15, 2011 @ 2:00 p.m.

It's the location on west fourth street near the bypass. Mr. Hill said parking was available to the west of the fire dept.

I'm supposed to call back on September 12th to verify the field trip and to try and let them know how many children to expect. Please let me know if you plan on attending and how many children, also.
